Tacoma Public Utilities

Tacoma Power: Municipally-owned Tacoma Power’s electricity primarily comes from clean, renewable hydroelectricity and is 97% carbon-free. Thanks to thoughtful planning and investments made decades ago, Tacoma Power customers benefit from a reliable electric system, a sustainable energy supply and low rates, 50% below national averages and over 60% below West Coast averages. Our system includes 7 dams (all in proximity to our service area), 350 miles of electric transmission lines and 2,011 miles of distribution lines. Tacoma Power generates nearly 50% of our own electricity and obtains the remainder as a “preference customer” of the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), providing low-cost power from federally-owned hydropower projects on the Columbia and Snake rivers and other renewable sources. Tacoma Water: Tacoma Water system is designed with redundancy and flexibility to ensure sufficient water for decades to come.  Tacoma Water has significant groundwater resources in the City that are used to supplement the main surface water supply from the Green River.  We have made, and continue to make, significant improvements and enhancements to our long established system and planning efforts. We will ensure that our portfolio of water supplies is adequate, reliable and resilient in order to meet our customers’ demands now and in the future. Among the strategic advantages of Tacoma’s water system are a large, protected watershed, redundant pipelines/systems, large groundwater and adequate water rights for future growth, and state-of-the-art treatment plants.
